Elmira Jackals News Release

With training camp just a short six weeks away, the Elmira Jackals are beginning to round out their roster. Today the team announced the signings of two of former college players, one with some local flavor.

With an eye always trained on the local hockey scene, the Jackals have signed Elmira College graduate Geoffrey O'Leary to a tryout contract. The 6-1, 220 lb. blueliner served as the Assistant Captain for the Soaring Eagles last season, leading the team in plus/minus two of his four years there. "He's a gritty, solid, defensive-defenseman," said Jackals Head Coach Todd Brost. "He hits pretty well, and in all the conversations I've had with his coaches and people who know him, he's just a solid player."

Current Elmira College Head Coach Tim Ceglarski agrees.

"He's an unbelievable team player," said Ceglarski, who took over as Men's Hockey Coach from current Jackals Assistant Coach Glenn Thomaris. "He is a very mature, level-headed player who is into playing good, solid defense."

In addition to bolstering the blue line, the Jackals also signed St. Lawrence graduate Mike Muir, a 6-2, 205 lb. forward. In four years with the Saints, the Needham, MA resident recorded 3g, 7a for 10 pts. and 47 PIMs in 122 games.

"Mike is your prototypical power forward," said Brost. "He's big, strong, and gritty. He'll be a much better pro player than his stats from college reflect. The college game isn't suited to his style of play."

The Jackals open Training Camp 2002 on Monday, September 30th at the Coach USA Center, taking to the ice at 10 am. Exhibition games will take place October 5th in Glens Falls and October 6th at the Coach USA Center at 4 pm. The Jackals kick off the regular season at home on October 11th at 7 pm against the Missouri River Otters. Call 734-PUCK for more information.
