New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey set a franchise record for their fastest start in the first 25 games of a season, surpassing their mark set in 1998 of 18-6, with an 8-4 win over the New Haven County Cutters. It was New Jersey's 19th win in their first 25 games.

New Haven continued to shoot themselves in the foot in ‘07, as they fell behind 5-0 after a 23 minute top of the first inning, which included 4 Cutters' errors. Sandy Madera and Clyde Williams both collected RBI singles for the Jackals.

Despite having control problems, Ben Thurmond tossed three scoreless innings to start the ballgame, but ran into trouble in the fourth. A two-out, RBI triple by Tom Koch put the Cutters on the board for the first time, but they still trailed 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cutters inched a bit closer as Ben Thurmond walked Matt Mercurio with the bases loaded.

The Jackals wouldn't collect another hit till the seventh inning, after their five run first inning. After a Francisco Leandro double, Jud Thigpen collected an RBI single. The next batter, Sandy Madera blasted an opposite field two-run homerun, extending the Jackals lead to 8-2. But in the bottom of the inning, the Cutters would get the homerun ball working for themselves as well. A two-run homerun by Orlando Encarnacion kept the deficit to four, but that's the closest they'd get despite threatening in the ninth.

Ben Thurmond improved to 4-0 in the 2007 season with the win. He lasted 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.. He struck out two and walked a season high of six batters.

The loss went to Rolando Valles. He allowed five runs, none earned five innings. He surrendered just two hits, walked two, and struck out two.
