New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - The New Jersey Jackals scored five unearned runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to an 8-4 win, Wednesday night, over the New Haven County Cutters in the second of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
Cutters' starter LHP Rolando Valles (0-3) was hurt by his defense in the first frame as consecutive errors to begin the game eventually led to five unearned runs and a 5-0 deficit.
Valles went 5.0 innings, overall, and did not allow a run or hit after the first.
Reliever RHP Adam Piechowski, signed earlier in the day, tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless ball in his Cutters' debut.
Four total Cutters' errors opened the door to a wild first inning that included RBI singles from Jackals' designated hitter Sandy Madera and first baseman Clyde Williams.
Madera went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Cutters' designated hitter Orlando Encarnacion connected for a towering two-run home run (2) off the left field scoreboard and third baseman Matt Mercurio went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Jackals' starter RHP Ben Thurmond (4-0) was solid in 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits to take the win.
With the win, the Jackals set a franchise record for their fastest start in the first 25 games of a season (19-6).
The Cutters look to avoid the three-game series sweep against the Jackals Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 pm.
A fantastic pitching match up is scheduled as the Cutters are set to throw LHP Brad Whitworth (2-2, 1.56 ERA) against the Jackals' LHP Isaac Pavlik (4-0, 1.75 ERA).
