Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have traded goaltender Nick Boucher to the Muskegon Fury for rookie forward Anthony Blumer, rookie defenseman Brett Angel and cash considerations.
The Jackals have reached an agreement with the Muskegon Fury, the team that has twice beaten Elmira in the Colonial Cup Finals, in a three-player trade. The Jackals sent starting goaltender Nick Boucher to Muskegon in return for rookie forward Anthony Blumer, rookie defenseman Brett Angel and cash considerations. The Jackals gain two very promising young players, while the Fury get an experienced #1 goaltender, of whom they are hoping will lead them to their 3rd straight Colonial Cup title.
Anthony Blumer comes to the Jackals with 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists) and 61 penalty minutes in 60 games played in the UHL this season. The 23 year-old started the year with the Quad City Mallards, playing in 57 games, and he is reunited with former Mallards teammate Flo Iberer. The Eagan, Minnesota native played in 3 games with Muskegon, since being traded from Quad City on March 6th, but did not record any points. At 6'0", 200lbs, Blumer becomes the tenth NCAA Division III alum currently on the Jackals roster; he played at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he posted 113 points (45 goals, 68 points) in 113 games over his 4-year college career.
At 6'6", 240 lbs, rookie defenseman Brett Angel brings some much needed size and toughness to the Jackals lineup. Angel was selected by the Nashville Predators in the third round (72nd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In his first season as a pro, the 24-year old attended the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins training camp before coming to Muskegon. In 46 games for the Fury, Angel had 6 assists and 196 penalty minutes, including 16 major penalties. Twice this season he was called up by Grand Rapids, totaling 4 games played, with no points and 5 minutes of penalties. Angel played the past four years in the Canadian college ranks with Acadia University in Nova Scotia in the CIS conference. He also played five years in the OHL Major Junior 'A' with North Bay, London, Mississauga and Windsor.
"We are excited to announce today the addition of two excellent young players that we know will help our team," said Jackals Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations Perry Florio. "We have added smooth skating rookie right wing Anthony Blumer and a big, tough rookie defenseman in 6'6, 245lb Brett Angel. Anthony has impressed us the three times we have seen him this year with his great speed and natural ability. Brett, currently on recall to Grand Rapids of the AHL and out with a minor injury, will add great size and a lot of toughness to our lineup when he gets cleared to play late next week. To fill the void in goal with the departure of Nick Boucher, we will be adding a goaltender from a US college to play along side Tyson Gajda."
Blumer joined the Jackals for practice Tuesday morning and will be in the lineup against Richmond on Wednesday night. Angel is coming off a hand injury, sustained while he was in the AHL with Grand Rapids. He is expected to arrive in Elmira next week, after the team's trip to Kalamazoo and Motor City.
The Jackals are back in action on Wednesday March 13th for Fan Appreciation Day against the Richmond Riverdogs for a 7:05 pm face off at the First Arena. Ticket prices for the game have been slashed to just $5 a ticket for every seat in the arena. Sodexho has also provided a big discount on concessions for beer, hot dogs, soft drinks and popcorn.
