Hogs acquire Mizerek at the deadline
March 14, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Tuesday that the United Hockey League club acquired veteran defenseman Joe Mizerek from the Adirondack Frostbite for rookie defenseman Joe Markusen. Martinson also announced that winger Greg Barber was loaned to the IceHogs American Hockey League affiliate, Milwaukee Admirals.
Mizerek brings experience to the blue-line for the IceHogs who have been playing with five rookies and second-year defenseman Steve Pelletier. This season with the Frostbite, Mizerek has played in 55 games and has accumulated 2g-4a-6pts and has a plus/minus rating of +6.
The Duluth, Minn. native is currently skating in his sixth full season at the professional level. Mizerek spent his first four seasons in the ECHL before playing with Rio Grande Valley (CHL) last season. The 2005-06 campaign marks his first in the UHL. Mizerek's best season as a pro came during the 2000-01 season while with Baton Rouge (ECHL) when the defenseman netted 11g-18a-29pts.
"We've added some veteran experience with Josh to our young defense," said Martinson. "As for Barber, he has been playing outstanding and he's been at the top of his game. He has certainly deserved this opportunity to play with the Admirals."
Barber has been one of the hottest IceHogs skaters during a stretch in which Rockford has been scoring goals in bunches. Barber had his club record tying 12-game point streak come to an end on Friday, and followed that with five goals over his next two games.
The AHL call-up is the second of the season for Barber who skated in one game for the San Antonio Rampage earlier this season. Last year, Barber spent 24 games with the Hershey bears (AHL), scoring 1g-2a-3pts. This is Barber's third pro season and he currently ranks third on the IceHogs with 22g-37a-59pts in 54 games.
Barber will join six other players in the Milwaukee line-up tonight who have suited up for the IceHogs over the past two seasons. Former and current Hogs on the Admirals roster include defenseman Corey Hessler and Nathan Lutz, forwards Brandon Segal, T.J. Reynolds and Paul Brown. The Admirals are slated to play the Grand Rapids Griffins tonight at 7 p.m. at the Bradle Center.
Next Home Game: Friday, March 17 vs. Richmond RiverDogs. The game is slated to start at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive IceHogs Poster #5 in a series of seven from Medicine Man, Johnson Press, Pepsi and the Rockford Register Star. Also, the IceHogs will hold its annual Airplane Toss with Wheels By RT and Allegiant Air. One lucky fan will have an opportunity to win a trip to Las Vegas with another winning airline tickets to Orlando. Also, don't forget your skates, as it's another "Skate With the Hogs" following the game.
Saturday, March 18 vs. Adirondack Frostbite. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 kids 12-and-under will receive a replica IceHogs Youth Jersey from Ameriprise Financial, WXRX-FM 104.9 and 13WREX. Also, Molly McMasters, co-founder of the Colon Club, will suit up and become the first female skater to play in an IceHogs game. March is "The UHL Cross Checks Colon Cancer" month. The UHL and the Colon Club have collaborated to raise awareness about Colon Cancer during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
