Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals (28-24-6-1) return to First Arena this weekend for a crucial two-game series against the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
The Jackals are coming off of a three-game road trip that saw them win their last two tilts against the Greenville Road Warriors and the South Carolina Stingrays to improve to 6-1-0-0 under head coach Robbie Nichols.
Elmira is tied with Gwinnett for seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings at 63 points. The Jackals are just three points shy of fifth place Florida with two games in hand on the Everblades. The top eight teams in the Eastern Conference will qualify for the 2011 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The Jackals finish the weekend on Sunday in the Garden State with a 4:00 p.m. contest against the Trenton Devils.
To purchase tickets to this weekend's games at First Arena call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto the new JackalsHockey.com.
FINDING WAYS TO BATTLE BACK
On Sunday, the Jackals overcame a three-goal deficit for the first time in the 2010-2011 season and earned two points with a dramatic 6-5 win over Greenville. The Jackals scored twice late in the second period and then lit the lamp again early in the third to tie the game. Late in the final frame, Elmira - having allowed three Greenville power-play goals in the contest - faced a penalty kill situation down 5-4, but Justin Donati and Yannick Tifu teamed up for a pair of short-handed goals to pull off the improbable win at the BI-LO Center.
The Jackals trailed 1-0 on Tuesday night against the South Carolina Stingrays when Michael Dubuc and Drew Paris fired in pucks to give Elmira a 2-1 second-period lead. In the third period with the game tied 2-2, newcomer Andrew Willock batted in a loose puck to give the Jackals a 3-2 win. Willock returned after the game to the FHL's Danbury Whalers for their playoff series against the New York Aviators. Goaltender Marco Cousineau made 33 saves on 35 shots to help the Jackals garner the victory.
In all seven games under Nichols, the Jackals have trailed at least 1-0 but have earned victories in six of those games. Prior to Nichols taking over, the Jackals were 6-16-0-1 when allowing the game's first goal. Elmira has doubled that win total under Nichols, now sporting a 12-17-0-1 record in the 2010-2011 season when permitting the first goal of a game. The 12 victories by the Jackals in that situation is tied for the third-highest total in the league entering this weekend, whereas their six wins when being scored on first prior to game action on Feb. 25 was tied for the second lowest total in the ECHL.
SCOUT NIGHT TOMORROW!
The Jackals will host "Scout Night" at First Arena on Friday at 7:35 p.m. against Gwinnett.
All packs, troops, and crews in the Five Rivers Council, BSA are invited to a fun-filled night with the Jackals. Activities include a sleep over after the game and a midnight movie with a jumbo-sized screen. Scouts signing up for the sleep over will also receive a hot dog, a soda, and a youth Jackals patch.
