Former Salmon Kings Wes Goldie and Scott Howes combined with Ethan Cox to each post three-point nights as the Alaska Aces beat the Victoria Salmon Kings 5-3 from Sullivan Arena on Wednesday night. The Aces moved into sole possession of first-place in the Western Conference, and stayed within four points of the Reading royals for the most points in the ECHL. Alaska's record improved to 36-20-4 on the year, and has points in 10 of their last 11 games. The Aces and Salmon Kings continue their three-game set with the Salmon Kings on Friday and Saturday night. Goldie opened the scoring on a laser shot off of a face-off at 13:34 of the first period. The goal was the only of the frame as Victoria had a disallowed goal 4:11 into the game after referee Curtis Marouelli ruled Adam Courchaine was interfered with on the play.
The teams traded goals in the second period. First, Howes scored at 3:25 on a shot from the slot that found a hole underneath David Shantz and slid past him into the net to make it 2-0 Aces. Victoria got on the board at 14:32 when Matt Siddall put a one-timer off the left post and in on a feed from Rob Hennigar to cut the Aces lead in half.
Goldie tallied for the second time on Wednesday 45 seconds into the third period. Howes set him up with a back-door feed on a power play, and Goldie buried it for his ninth multi-goal game on the season to make it 3-1 Alaska. The Kings got back on the board when Milan Gajic scored on a rebound at 7:02 to bring Victoria within a goal. The Aces then put the game away with a pair of games. Cox made it 4-2 at 8:16 on a Goldie set-up, and then Kory Falite finished off a three-on-one at 10:24 to extend the lead to 5-2. Victoria's Jeff Caister scored a power play goal at 16:42, but the Aces closed the door after that for the two-goal victory.
Adam Courchaine (14-7-2) made 23 saves on 26 shots. David Shantz (22-21-3) took the loss, making 22 saves on 27 shots. The Aces power play went 1-2, while the Salmon Kings went 1-3. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 27-26 in the game.
The Aces will remain home to continue the three-game set with Victoria on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are on sale now.
