Jackals ninth inning rally falls short

Little Falls, NJ- New Jersey's ninth inning rally fell short, as they were defeated by the Brockton Rox, 5-3, at Yogi Berra Stadium

Brockton took an early lead in the second inning on a two-run homerun by Nestor Smith. It was Smith's fifth homer of the season and it gave the Rox a 2-0 lead.

Brian Jones pushed the third Brockton run across with a single in the top of the third.

The Jackals finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. An RBI double by Wilton Veras scored Zack Smithlin, inching the Jackals closer.

The Rox would get some separation in the top of the seventh. Saul Bustos hit a two-run homer to right field, making it a 5-1 Brockton advantage.

New Jersey would not go quietly. In the bottom of the eighth, with a runner aboard, Chris Rowan hit his twelfth homer of the season. The two-run blast made it a 5-3 ballgame.

New Jersey loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Tony Runion would get Wilton Veras to ground out into a game ending double play, to close the game out.

Jackals' starter Josh Miller pitched a solid seven and a third innings of work. Miller gave up four earned runs on seven hits, in a losing effort.

Brian Buchanan, of the Rox, pitched seven and two thirds innings, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. The victory was Buchanan's eighth of 2004. Tony Runion got the save, pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.

For the Jackals, Wilton Veras was 2-5 with two doubles and an RBI.

Nestor Smith, of the Rox, was 2-4 with a two-run homerun.
