Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have completed three separate trades with fellow United Hockey League clubs. The Jackals sent Charlie Elezi to Roanoke for left wing Josh Tataryn, they received the rights to forward Ryan Barnes from Kalamazoo for a player to be named later and finally send the rights of Barnes to Danbury for 2nd year rookie defenseman Mathieu Wathier. In other action Tuesday left wing Sam Paolini was recalled by the Rochester Americans of the AHL.
Over the weekend Elmira reached a deal with the Roanoke Valley Vipers that sends left wing Josh Tataryn to the Jackals in exchange for forward Charlie Elezi. Tartaryn, who played the last two seasons for the franchise when they were the Port Huron Beacons, has 15 points (11 goals, 4 assists) in all 28 games for the Vipers. In 2004-05, Tataryn had 21 goals (37 points) in 68 games for Port Huron. The 23-year old from Orton, Ontario was on the 2003-04 Port Huron club that lost to the Jackals in the UHL's Eastern Conference Finals.
"In Josh we are getting an everyday player and a proven goal scorer," said Jackals Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations Perry Florio. "He is currently third on Roanoke in goals with eleven and he will really help round out our group of forwards."
On Tuesday the Jackals acquired the rights of forward Ryan Barnes from the Kalamazoo Wings in exchange for a player to be named later. The deadline for the aforementioned player to be mutually agreed upon between the two clubs in no later than the UHL's Trade Deadline.
In a separate move on Tuesday, the Jackals sent the rights of Ryan Barnes to the Danbury Trashers for rookie defenseman Mathieu Wathier. Wathier, although still a rookie by UHL definition, is in his second year as a pro, all with Danbury. Wathier has appeared in 18 games this season, recording one assist and six penalty minutes. The 6'1" 195 lbs defenseman from Les Coteaux, Quebec played 31 games scoring 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) and adding 24 PIMs for Danbury in 2004-05 after signing mid-season. The 22-year old also appeared in 11 playoff games for the Trashers last year, accounting for 1 assist and 6 penalty minutes.
"Defense is clearly the biggest issue for our team," said Coach Florio. "Mathieu is a very solid young defenseman who should really help our back line."
Paolini, who has played in Rochester's last two games, was returned to the Jackals after the Americans 3-2 win over Hamilton Saturday night. But it did not last for long. Paolini was recalled by the Amerks Tuesday afternoon and may stay up with Rochester through the New Years' weekend.
After a rare holiday break, the Jackals return to practice Wednesday evening and they are back in action at the First Arena Friday December 30th for a 7:05 pm showdown with the Adirondack Frostbite, their first trip to Elmira during the regular season.
