Jackals Freeze the IceMen

Elmira Jackals News Release

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Elmira Jackals beat the Evansville IceMen for the third time in four tries this season on Saturday night at the Ford Center. The 3-1 victory improved their record to 23-18-4 on the season.

While there wasn't any goal scoring in the first period, it didn't go by without its share of fireworks. A night after accumulating 58 penalty minutes in an overtime win against Cincinnati, the IceMen still appeared to have some anger in need of venting as they took part in two separate fights with the Jackals within the first 1:08 of play. The scraps energized both benches as each team went on to register 10 shots in the stanza. Ian Keserich stood tall in his second start for the Jackals and stopped each first period shot, while Paul Karpowich matched him at every turn for the IceMen.

In the second period incidental contact between Elmira's Justin Daniels and Karpowich resulted in an interference penalty and the IceMen turned it into a power play goal. Josh Beaulieu took the rebound of a Daniel Tetrault point shot and shuffled it past Keserich at the 2:33 mark. The Jackals didn't wilt under the weight of the deficit and potted a pair of goals to take their first lead of the evening. Working from behind the net, Daniels hit Brandon Blandina on the doorstep and he punched home his fifth goal of the season to put Elmira on the board at 9:28. Just under four minutes later Jordan Pietrus finished off a feed from Kevin Harvey to lift Elmira in front for the first time. Elmira's lead could have been bigger as the Jackals launched 18 shots on goal in the second, but Karpowich kept his team in striking distance.

The third period was Keserich's time to shine as the IceMen peppered him with 11 shots. The best chance came in the final minute when, with Karpowich pulled for the extra attacker, Keserich had to use a full split to make a right toe save on the doorstep against Stefan Della Rovere. Louie Caporusso salted away the win for the Jackals with an empty net goal with 1:27 left in the game. The goal was Caporusso's team-leading 18th of the season and sixth in his last four games.

Keserich claimed his second win of the season with 31 saves for the Jackals. Elmira went 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
