New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals used a huge top of the ninth inning against "El Guapo" to take a 5-2 over the Nashua Pride on Friday evening.
The first four innings featured scoreless baseball as starting pitchers Tim Bausher for Nashua, and Joel Bennett for New Jersey battled each other through the early innings. But the Jackals would finally start the scoring in the top of the fifth.
With Zack Smithlin aboard second base and one out, Sandy Madera went opposite field and spanked a ground ball into right field, scoring Smithlin, and giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead. The Jackals jumped ahead 2-0 in the sixth via Dustin Yount's RBI double, but the lead would disappear in the next inning
In the bottom of the seventh, the Pride made up the deficit with one swing of the bat. A two-run homerun by Brian Duplissie, his 14th of the year, tied the game at two.
Two innings later, the Jackals made one more push and they made it count. They scored three runs against Rich Garces to take a three run lead into the bottom of the ninth that they'd never relinquish. Mihalics broke the tie with an RBI single. New Jersey scored the final two runs on a sac fly by Madera and an RBI single by Wilton Veras.
Kevin Fitzgerald earned the win with two stellar innings of relief. He yielded just one hit and fanned three.
Rich Garces took the loss.
