Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- The Quebec Capitales batted around in the 5th inning for the second straight night, but this time they made their big inning hold up in a 6-4 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes at Hanover Insurance Park on Friday night.
Both teams score a run in the 1st, Quebec on an Ivan Naccarata RBI double off Junior Guerrero (6-4) and Worcester on an Andrew Wishy solo home run to rightcenter off Gabe Ribas (1-0). The Tornadoes used three doubles to take the lead in the 3rd, with two-baggers by Dominic Ramos and Omar Pena driving in the runs. But Guerrero, who had set down 12 straight Capitales hitters, ran into big trouble in the 5th. Two singles and a hit bater loaded the bases for Naccarata, who laced his second double of the night, driving in two and tying the game at 3-3. Guerrero bounced back to strike out Pat Scalabrini for the second out of the inning, then issued an intentional walk to Eddie Lantigua, loading the bases. Guerrero then lost command of the strike zone, walking Patrick Deschenes and Greg Stevens, forcing home two runs, and giving Quebec a 5-3 lead that they would not relinquish. Both teams tacked on single runs in the 7th to provide the final tally.
Ribas (1-0) collected the win and Guerrero (6-3) was tagged with the loss. Cristian Mendoza pitched a scoreless 9th with two strikeouts to record his 5th save of the season. Keith Beauregard had three hits and Dominic Ramos added two, as they extended their hitting streaks to 7 and 8 games, respectively. The Capitales batted around and scored 5 runs in the 5th inning on Thursday night, but the Tornadoes were able to overcome what was then a three-run deficit. Worcester will try to get back on track on Saturday night in Game Three of their four-game series with Quebec. Righty Matt Weagle will make the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Quebec righty Keith Dunn. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
