New Haven County Cutters News Release

(West Haven, CT- August 23, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters held the lead twice but watched the bullpen falter in a 6-4 loss to the rival New Jersey Jackals.

The Cutters took the early lead with one run in the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Jose Mateo and a single by PJ Johnston, Hector Lebron moved both runners into scoring position with a chopper to the right side of the infield. Jimmy Hurst drove in the Mateo on a ground ball to give the Cutters a 1-0 lead.

With the Jackals up 3-1 entering the seventh inning, New Haven stormed back and took the lead. A leadoff walk to Johnston and a single by Hector Lebron put the tying run on base for Jimmy Hurst. A wild pitch by Craig Breslow allowed Lebron to get into scoring position and Johnston to score. Jimmy Hurst then hit an opposite field two-run homer to regain the lead for the Cutters 4-3. The home run was Jimmy Hurstfs team leading 15th of the season.

Ryan Bonesio retired 15 of 17 batters after giving up a two-run homer to Wilton Veras in the third inning. In the eighth inning with two outs and a one run lead, Bonesio allowed a single and a walk and was replaced in the game with Laine McKeller. New Jerseyfs Chris Rowan belted a three-run homer over the left field fence for his league leading 20th home run of the season.

Fabricio Benitez closed the door in the ninth despite putting the tying run on base with one out. Benitez struck out two on his way to his 13th save of the season.
