New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ â Chris Rowan did it again for the Jackals, as his late homerun helped push the Jackals past the Cutters, 6-4.
After managing to put two on with no one out, the Cutters managed to pick up one run in the bottom of the first inning, on an RBI groundout by Jimmy Hurst.
In the top of the second inning, a two-out RBI single by Alberto Vasquez evened up the ballgame.
During the following inning, Wilton Veras hit a two-run homer to left center field, his fifth of the season, putting the Jackals ahead 3-1.
The Cutters would finally put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. P.J. Johnston scored on a wild pitch, and Jimmy Hurst cranked a two-run homerun, putting New Haven ahead for the first time since the first, 4-3.
But the Jackals would not remain behind for long. A three-run homerun in the top of the eighth inning, put New Jersey back on top, 6-4.
New Jersey starter Brad Whitworth pitched rather well, despite walking seven batters in six innings of work. In a no decision, he scattered five hits, while only allowing one earned run, and striking out two. Craig Breslow got the win in relief, despite giving up a homerun to Jimmy Hurst. He struck out four in two innings of work. Fabricio Benitez picked up his 13th save.
Ryan Bonesio went seven and two thirds innings for the Cutters. He gave up five earned runs, on eight hits, while walking three, and striking out two. Laine McKeller got the loss in relief.
For New Jersey, Wilton Veras was 2-4 with a two-run homerun, and two runs scored.

Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28. On Thursday August 12, 2004, Rowan also broke the league record for grand slams in a season. In an 8-5 win over Quebec, Rowan belted his third grand slam of 2004 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings.
