Izturis and Palmer to Rehab with Bees

SALT LAKE CITY (July 17, 2010) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that infielder Maicer Izturis and right-handed pitcher Matt Palmer will both begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake. The Salt Lake Bees also announced that right-handed pitcher Tommy Mendoza has been placed on the Disabled List with a sore right shoulder, right-handed pitcher Bobby Mosebach has been activated from the Disabled List and assigned to Salt Lake, and infielder Abel Nieves has been promoted to Salt Lake from Double-A Arkansas.

Izturis, 29, was placed on the Disabled List on June 16 with a strained left forearm. In 30 games for the Angels in 2010, he owns a .233 batting average with eight doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI and four stolen bases. In 2009, Izturis hit .300 in 114 games with the Angels, posting 22 doubles, eight home runs, 65 RBI and 13 stolen bases. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela native was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a free agent in 1998 and joined the Angels via trade from the Washington Nationals in 2004.

Palmer, 31, was placed on the Disabled List on May 7 with a sprained right shoulder. He has appeared in nine games (one start) for the Angels in 2010, owning a 0-1 record with a 6.26 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched. In 2009, he owned an 11-2 record with a 3.93 ERA in 40 games for the Angels. He appeared in two games for the Bees last season prior to joining the Angels. The Memphis, Tenn. native joined the Angels via free agency in January 2009.

Mendoza, 22, has appeared in six games (five starts) for the Bees in 2010. In four games (all starts) for the Travelers this season, he owns a 1-1 record with a 3.44 ERA. The Hialeah, Fla. native was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2005 draft.

Mosebach, 25, began the 2010 season on the Disabled List with right bicep tendinitis. He has appeared in five games of relief for the Arizona League Angels in 2010, owning a 3.86 ERA with six strikeouts. Mosebach finished the 2009 season with a 4-2 record and 1.49 ERA in 52 games of relief between Salt Lake and Arkansas and appeared in three games of relief for the Angels. The West Palm Beach, Fla. native was originally selected by the Angels in the ninth round of the 2005 draft.

Nieves, 24, has appeared in 58 games for the Travelers in 2010, hitting .229 with three doubles and 15 RBI. In seven games for the Bees this season, he owns a .188 batting average. The Maracay, Venezuela native was originally selected by the Angels in the 50th round of the 2005 draft.
