June 30, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - The Omaha Royals are 35-30 this season against PCL clubs not named "Isotopes". But, after dropping the first game of a four-game home stand to Albuquerque 6-2, the Royals fell to 3-10 when facing that club. The âTopes took advantage of an error and two wild pitches to score three runs and break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning Thursday night in front of 2,828 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Jason Wood led off the decisive inning and reached when Omaha second baseman Justin Gemoll could not handle his one-hopper. Former Husker Todd Sears followed with a single off Kansas City reliever Jeremy Affeldt, who was beginning his second rehab assignment with Omaha since May 24. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, they each scored on a pair of wild pitches by Affeldt (0-1), who took the loss. Chris Ashby drew a walk and scored on Derek Wathan's double down the left field line, making it 5-2.
The Royals had trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but rallied to tie the game by scoring two runs off former big league lefty Donovan Osborne. He had blanked Omaha on three hits over the first five innings, but gave up three more hits in the sixth. The Royals first run scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Phillips and Omaha tied the game on an Aaron Guiel double, which accounted for his club-leading 55th RBI.
Hard-throwing right-hander Ben Howard (3-2) picked up the win for Albuquerque, firing two-and-a-third scoreless stanzas. Howard struck out four Royals, including Adrian Brown looking to end the seventh, leaving two runners on base and preserving the 2-all tie.
Danny Tamayo turned in a quality start for the Royals, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings, but was not involved in the decision.
Omaha (38-43) owns the worst home record at 13-20 in the PCL, while sporting the loop's top road mark at 25-23.
The Royals host Albuquerque (44-37) in game 2 of the series Friday at 7:05 p.m.: RH Frank Castillo (6-4, 4.61) vs. RH Kyle Snyder (0-0, 1.56). Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
