Isotopes drop first game of season, 5-1 to Omaha
April 7, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Chad Hermansen doubled twice-the only two hits of the evening for the Isotopes-as Albuquerque dropped its first game of the 2007 season in a 5-1 setback to the Omaha Royals Saturday night at Isotopes Park.
Omaha starter Tyler Lumsden held the âTopes (2-1) hitless through four full innings before Hermansen led off the fifth with a double to left. Albuquerque couldn't drive him home, and the âTopes wouldn't record another hit until the seventh when Hermansen smacked another double off reliever Jason Shiell. That double pushed Scott Seabol, who induced a one-out walk, to third base. One batter later, Valentino Pascucci grounded out, allowing Seabol to trot home with the only run of the night for the Isotopes.
Omaha (1-2) lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the third inning as Fernando Cortez singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a groundout and scored via an Angel Berroa single. The O-Royals would add two more in the sixth-due in part to a bout with wildness from the Albuquerque pitching corps. Starter Wes Obermueller walked the first batter of the inning and induced a groundout to the second hitter, before being replaced by reliever Ross Wolf. The âTopes right-hander walked three-straight hitters to force in a run, then allowed an RBI single to make the score 3-0. Leading 3-1, the O-Royals added two insurance runs in the ninth to close out their first win of the season.
Obermueller (0-1) was effective, but was pinned with the loss. Through 5.1 frames, Obermueller allowed two runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one. Wolf exited before recording an out, and Nic Ungs came on to finish off the last 3.2 innings, surrendering two runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Lumsden (1-0) picked up the win, scattering a hit with no runs, two walks and three Ks. Shiell tossed the final four innings and collected the save.
At the plate for Omaha, Berroa and Mitch Maier each finished with two hits on the night in a seven-hit effort for the Royals.
The âTopes and O-Royals wrap up the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at Isotopes Park. Australian southpaw Paul Mildren gets the nod for Albuquerque, while Dewon Brazelton takes the ball for Omaha. First pitch is set for 1:35 PM. An Easter Egg Hunt, open to kids ages 2-12, will be held on the field at 12:45 PM, courtesy of Raley's Superstores.
