Beavers Win Wild One In 11 Innings
April 7, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA- A wild pitch by Grizzlies reliever Ryan Meaux sealed a 6-4 11th inning win for the Portland Beavers Friday night. 6,525 fans were on hand to witness the Grizzlies first loss of the young 2007 season.
Portland starter Ryan Ketchner surrendered two runs in the second inning on an RBI double by right fielder Nate Schierholtz, who later scored in the inning to make it 2-0. Ketchner lasted 5 innings, giving up 8 hits on 4 earned runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
His opponent, Grizzlies starter Travis Blackley, made his first start in a Grizzlies uniform since being traded late this spring from the Tacoma Rainiers for former Grizzlies outfielder Jason Ellison. Blackley pitched five scoreless innings, gave up just 2 hits and 2 earned runs while registering 7 strikeouts.
"It was good to be out there and to give us a chance to win the game," said Blackley. "I was a little inconsistent, but coming straight out of spring training I was happy with my performance."
The Grizzlies' offense was highlighted by Schierholtz's' 2-hit, 2 RBI night that included a solo home run, his second in two days, that cleared the right field manual scoreboard to put Fresno on top 3-0. In the top of the fifth, Portland shortstop Luis Cruz brought the Beavers to within one run at 3-2 after his 2-run homer off Blackley bounced off the left-field foul pole. The homerun was just the second hit of the game given up by Blackley.
Portland tied the game in the eighth inning at 4 after Royce Huffman's double in the left field corner scored two runs. The Beavers took a 6-4 lead in the 11th inning after Portland third baseman Brett Dowdy scored on Grizzlies reliever Ryan Meaux's wild pitch and an RBI single by Beavers right fielder Vince Sinisi.
The Grizzlies return to Chukchansi Park tomorrow night at 7:05p.m. to take on the Beavers in the third game of their three game series. The first 2,500 fans at tomorrow night's contest will receive Chukchansi Park Snow "Gloves" presented by Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino. Tickets are on sale now at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, by calling (559) 320-TIXS or visiting www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
