Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Islanders rolled into the Arena Glencore for the second match of the three-game Quebec road trip they are currently on. They were able to capture a big victory in the first game on the roady against the Gatineau Olympiques whom they defeated 2-1 behind strong performances from both Patrick Guay and Jacob Goobie. Tonight, the Isles turned their focus to an opponent not quite at the top of the food chain in Quebec. The Huskies were rolling into this one fresh off a win against bottom of the league Cape Breton, but were taken down by the Isles 7-1 in the first meeting this season, not exactly a hopeful scoreline to base your performance off of for Rouyn-Noranda. With the Islanders looking to boost their win streak to three straight and stay undefeated on this Quebec swing, the Huskies were in for some stiff competition.
It only took 3:44 for the ice to be broken in this one. William Trudeau jumped in on the offensive break where he took a cross-ice feed from Xavier Simoneau and skated in tight to wrist one right past Madore. Assisting on the opening Isles tally were Simoneau and Ryan Maynard. Next up in the first frame it was Patty Guay continuing his league-wide tear. Guay deked and weaved his way through a crowd in front of the net where he precisely placed a back-handed shot right past Madore who didn't even know it was shot yet. Helping hand on Guay's 20th of the year went to Jakub Brabenec. Finally, to cap off an opening period that was dominated by Charlottetown, Lukas Cormier sent home his 12th of the season. Cormier ripped one over the glove of Madore on the powerplay to put the Isles up 3-0 not even halfway through the opening frame.
Shots favored the Islanders 14-4 going into period two.
The pack wasn't going to let the Isles walk all over them in this one. After a first frame that saw the Isles hold the Huskies to four shots, they came back strong in the second getting the puck on net twelve times and capitalizing twice. First up it was Samuel Johnson potting his seventh of the year. Johnson was able to get in tight and throw a puck on net that squeaked just between Goobie and the post. Assists on the Huskies first of the game went to Daniil Bourash and Dyllan Gill. Then, it was Louis-Philippe Fontaine beating Goobie with just over a minute left to play in the frame. Helping hands on the goal that brought the Huskies to within a score were Alex Arsenault and Emeric Gaudet.
Shots still favored the Isles going into the final frame 20-16.
Charlottetown must have just used the second frame as a breather because they came out firing in the third. To start things off it was Patrick Guay netting his second of the game at 4:44 into the frame. Guay took a cross-crease feed from his favorite setup man Simoneau before angling himself just right to snap it home past Madore. Assists went to Simoneau and Brett Budgell. At 8:56 into the frame, the Isles found themselves on the powerplay and it was Jakub Brabenec finding the loose puck in front to whack it home for his eighth of the season. Helpers were given to Brett Budgell and Patrick Guay. It was on the penalty kill the next time the Islanders recorded a tally. William Trudeau was able to get control of the puck and send it down the ice and into the empty net for his second of the game and push the lead to 6-2. At 15:59 the Huskies were on the powerplay again and decided to pull Madore once again to try and get the upper hand. However, Charlottetown's penalty kill stood strong when Noah Laaouan took advantage this time finding the open net from his own zone for his third of the season to cap off an Islanders 7-2 win. Jakub Brabenec picked up the helper on the final goal.
Final shots were in the Isles favor 35-28.
The Islanders offense continues to astonish as their top scorers keep adding multi-point games night in and night out. Jacob Goobie was also able to stop 26 shots en route to his third straight win. Charlottetown is next in action tomorrow in the early evening when they roll into Val-d'Or to take on the Foreurs at the Centre Agnico Eagle. Puck drops at 5 pm AST.
Three Stars of the Game:
Patrick Guay(CHA)- 2 goals and 2 assists.
Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- 3 assists.
Louis-Philippe Fontaine(RNH)- 1 goal.
