Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Greensboro, NC â Kannapolis swept a morning double header in Greensboro 5-4, 5-4 Wednesday. More than 2,000 screaming schoolchildren packed the brand new First Horizon Park for the 11:00 am education day start of game one. The I's quieted the hoard of middle-schoolers with one run in the third and a strong start by left-hander Ray Liotta. The Kenner, Louisiana native tossed three near-perfect innings before being touched for four runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth. Liotta finished with six innings and four runs, three of them earned. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Josh Hansen drove a 3-1 fastball to right field, off the brand new video board to put the Intimidators on top 5-4. Matt Zaleski came on to earn the save, his second of the year. Liotta took his second win.
In the second half of the double header, the I's fell in a quick 3-0 hole. Right handed starter Jack Egb ert made the spot start, but the reliever looked shaken in the first. Egbert walked the bases loaded before allowing three runs in the opening frame. Egbert settled down after that tossing four strong innings with just the three runs. Behind the strong bullpen work of Egbert, Michael Moat, and John Hurd, the I's scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth â capped by back to back homers by Sean Smith and Boomer Berry to take a 5-3 lead. Moat allowed a solo homer in the sixth, but Hurd came on to save the game in the seventh for another 5-4 win. Moat got the win, Hurd the save.
The Intimidators return home for an eight game home stand featuring four game sets with Hickory and Lexington. Thursday's game starts at 7:05 and can be heard live at www.intimidatorsbaseball.com.
