Buffalo Bisons News Release

In front of 7,211 cheerful faces on-hand for Youth Baseball Day, the Buffalo Bisons came up just short Sunday afternoon in a 7-6 defeat in 11 innings to the IronPigs at Sahlen Field.

In a game with four different lead changes, the IronPigs prevented the series sweep with Malquin Canelo's sacrifice line-drive to left field against Bisons reliever Kirby Snead, allowing Matt McBride to score the game-winning run from 90 feet away. The Bisons attempted to extend the game in the bottom half of the frame after Anthony Alford walked and stole second base but Billy McKinney grounded out to first base to end the nearly four-hour contest.

The Bisons appeared to have the momentum after their sequence of events in the home half of the seventh inning when they trailed 5-3. With the bases loaded and IronPigs reliever Tom Windle coming out of the bullpen, Reese McGuire provided the spark as his two-out, three-run double to centerfield. However, the brief 6-5 lead vanished when IronPigs slugger Damek Tomscha tied the game at six with his solo home run in the eighth.

That wasn't the first time McGuire carried the lumber for the Bisons on Sunday. Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, the Seattle native brought home Alford for the RBI single to left. McGuire was also responsible for the Herd's first run after his sacrifice fly in the second inning allowed Billy McKinney to score. The Bisons then tied the game at 3 in that sixth inning when Patrick Kivlehan reached home on an outfield error by Lane Adams after Andy Burns' RBI single. Burns joined McGuire with three hits on the afternoon - all singles.

Again, this was a brief victory for the Herd as reliever Matt Dermody allowed a two-home run in the first pitch of Jan Hernandez's seventh-inning at-bat for the IronPigs 5-3 lead, fueling the see-saw battle heading down the stretch.

As part of a MLB rehab assignment, David Phelps started on the mound for the Herd as part of a three-start tune-up before rejoining the Toronto Blue Jays. After missing the entire 2018 season due to a torn UCL and a successful Tommy John surgery, the righty threw a 1-2-3 inning on 9 pitches in his lone frame of work.

Ryan Feierabend threw the next four innings with his only blip coming against Matt McBride. Originally having an off-day, McBride hit a two-home run in the fourth inning for Lehigh Valley's first lead of the day at 2-1 after replacing starting catcher Rob Brantly in the second due to injury. Feierabend struck out three batters and allowed two runs on five hits on 87 pitches.

Following an off-day tomorrow, the Herd begin a six-day road-trip with series against the Indianapolis Indians and the Louisville Bats starting on Tuesday. They return to Sahlen Field with a mid-week homestand against the Indians from June 18 - 20.
