Moosic, PA - The Syracuse Mets hit five home runs on Sunday afternoon but lost both games of a doubleheader to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at PNC Field. The RailRiders won the first game, 7-5, and the second game, 14-3.
In game one, Syracuse (30-33) struck first in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Rubén Tejada homered down the left-field line for a 1-0 Mets lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (36-25) responded in the bottom of the second. With Mike Tauchman at first base and one out, Logan Morrison doubled to score Tauchman and tie the game, 1-1. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Ford hit a ball over the right-field wall for a grand slam that put the RailRiders in front, 5-1.
The Mets pulled closer in the fourth. With two outs, Grégor Blanco walked. Dilson Herrera followed with a home run that cut the deficit in half to two, 5-3.
Syracuse scored again in the top of the sixth. With Travis Taijeron at third and Arismendy Alcantara at first with two outs, Alcantara stole second base. The RailRiders threw down to second to try and catch Alcantara stealing, and on the play, Taijeron stole home to trim the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre advantage to one, 5-4.
The RailRiders responded in the bottom of the sixth though. Logan Morrison led off with a double, and Ryan McBroom followed with a two-run home run that extended the Scranton/WIlkes-Barre lead to three, 7-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mets scored a run when Taijeron grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, scoring Rajai Davis from third base to make it a 7-5 ballgame, but that would be the final score of the first game.
In the second game, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasted no time scoring with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three walks loaded the bases to begin the frame. After a groundout into a fielder's choice, Kyle Higashioka picked up a two-run single that gave the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. Brad Miller followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage. McBroom plated another run with a line drive to center field to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Logan Morrison capped the inning off with a three-run homer for a 7-0 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead.
The RailRiders added two more runs in the second on a Brad Miller two-run homer with one out in the frame to make it a 9-0 ballgame.
Syracuse finally scored in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a Rymer Liriano home run to left field, in his first game back since being activated off the injured list, to trim the deficit to eight, 9-1.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre struck right back, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded walk for a 10-1 advantage.
The Mets used the long ball again in the top of the fifth. Herrera led off the frame by crushing a ball over the left-field wall to pull Syracuse back within eight, 10-2.
The RailRiders added a home run of their own in the bottom of the fifth with Higashioka powering a two-run home to extend his team's advantage to 12-2.
In the sixth, a Thairo Estrada sacrifice fly and a Tauchman double both scored runs for a 14-2 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead.
Syracuse ended the day on a high note with another Herrera home run to lead off the seventh to make it a 14-3 ballgame. The homer was Herrera's third of the day between the two games and his 12th of the season.
The Mets have an off day on Monday before starting a six-day homestand on Tuesday night with the first game of a three-game series against the Charlotte Knights. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
