IronPigs Earn Third Straight Shutout over Tribe

May 17, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Lehigh Valley IronPigs earned their third straight shutout over the Indianapolis Indians with a 1-0 win that featured seven dominating innings from starter Dave Bush and spoiled an excellent effort from Tribe starter Jo-Jo Reyes, who allowed just a single over seven strong innings on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park.

After shutting out the Indians 4-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two of their four game series, Lehigh Valley shut down the Tribe offense for a third straight game on Thursday night. The 1-0 shutout win by the IronPigs handed Tribe starter Jo-Jo Reyes (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) his first loss of the season despite the southpaw tossing six straight scoreless frames to begin the game and allowing just a single score over seven.

The only blemish against Reyes and only run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the IronPigs led off the frame with back-to-back base hits. LF Michael Spidale began what turned out to be the game -winning rally with a double to left, before moving up to third when C Tuffy Gosewisch followed with a base hit.

3B Tim Kennelly then came to the plate and laid down a bunt to the first base side of the mound that plated Spidale for the contest's lone tally as Reyes went on to finish off the frame with no further damage. It was the second straight contest that the IronPigs scored the game's lone score late in the contest after earning a 1-0 win off an RBI base knock from Cody Overbeck in the sixth the night before.

The single score by Lehigh Valley would make an excellent effort from Bush (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) stand up, as the Major League veteran held the Indians just four hits over seven spectacular innings to earn the win and improve to 3-3 on the season. Following Bush, IronPigs relievers David Purcey (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and Michael Schwimer (1.0 IP) combined for two scoreless innings of relief with Purcey earning his third hold and Schwimer notching his fifth save.

Though Schwimer tossed a perfect ninth, Purcey's eighth was not as easy as Tribe pinch-hitter Chase d'Arnaud sparked an Indians rally attempt. d'Arnaud led off the frame with a base-on-balls and stole second to give the Tribe a runner in scoring position with no outs and the recently optioned Alex Presley coming to the plate.

However, one night after the Indians bunted into a triple play to end a key eighth-inning rally try, they once again fell victim to tough luck as a liner from Presley was snagged by shortstop Andres Blanco, who proceeded to double off d'Arnaud at second. The line-out double play proved to be key as RF Gorkys Hernandez followed with a base hit to right that would have had a chance to bring home d'Arnaud.

Despite failing to score an earned run for a fourth straight contest, the Indians offense did show signs of life especially 1B Jeff Clement, who remained red hot by going 2-for-4 with two doubles. The effort by Clement extended his hitting streak to five games during which time he is hitting .471 (8-for-17).

The Indians (22-18) and IronPigs (24-16) now wrap up their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Rudy Owens will look to end the Tribe's three-game losing streak when he takes the mound on Friday, while Lehigh Valley will look for the series sweep with LHP Pat Misch scheduled to start.

The contest will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones, with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
