Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Monday night + Road game = Extra Innings
For the third straight Monday road game, the IronBirds played extra innings. Two weeks ago, the IronBirds fell 3-2 to the Staten Island Yankees. Last week, Aberdeen knocked off Hudson Valley, 1-0. Last night, the Tri-City ValleyCats took home a walk off, 2-1 win, on a Ryan Dineen home run off of Jose Figuereo. The IronBirds are now 4-2 in extra inning games this season. Mike Yastrzemski scored the lone Aberdeen run in the sixth, courtesy of a Manny Hernandez RBI single.
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
The IronBirds struck out 15 times last night, equaling a season high that had been previously set back on June 23rd at Staten Island. Seven of the 15 came from ValleyCats' reliever Richard Rodriguez. Rodriguez fanned the first seven Aberdeen batters he faced before Anthony Vega blooped a double down the left field line with one out in the 12th.
Quick turnaround...
Last night's game lasted three hours and twenty eight minutes. By the time the IronBirds departed Joseph L. Bruno Stadium last night, there was approximately 12 hours to go until first pitch for today's game. The IronBirds are used to playing long games. They have had eight games go over three hours.
On the mound today...
The IronBirds will send RHP Janser Severino to the hill in the rubber match of this three game series. Severino's last two appearances have both been starts. In his last outing, in Hudson Valley, he went 3.2 innings, allowed just three hits, one run (unearned), and struck out two. He has an 0-1 record with a 1.80 ERA in 15.0 innings pitched so far this season. The IronBirds will face Tri-City's RHP Mark Appel. Appel, a Houston native, will be making his second professional start. This year's number one overall draft pick, Appel, went two innings in his professional debut back on Friday against the Lowell Spinners. He allowed three hits, two runs (both earned), striking out one. The ValleyCats would go on to win 5-4 in ten innings. Appel did not factor into the decision.
Coming home again
After this morning's game, the IronBirds will return home for a six game home stand, with three against the State College Spikes, and three against the Williamsport Crosscutters. Following the home stand, the IronBirds will enjoy the first off day of the season next Tuesday before beginning a six game road trip to Vermont and Jamestown.
