State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes shortstop Cesar Valera has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of July 1-7, 2013.

Valera, a native of Sosua, Venezuela, hit .478 over the week with five doubles, a triple and a home run. The 21-year-old also produced a pair or three-hit games, one on Monday at Williamsport and one on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against Mahoning Valley. Valera also holds an 18-game on-base streak, currently the second longest string in the NYPL.

The Cardinals signed Valera as an international free agent in November 2008 out of Venezuela, and he has sparkled both offensively and defensively since joining the Spikes this season. Valera holds a .362 batting average on the season, good for fifth in the NYPL, including a .421 mark against left-handed pitching. Meanwhile, his 12 extra-base hits, including 8 doubles, are tied for the second-most in the loop.

Valera is the first Spike to earn one of the NYPL's weekly awards in 2013, after Tyler Gaffney, who is back playing football at Stanford University, copped the honor for the week of July 23-29, 2012.

The Spikes, with Valera in tow, will be in action on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) for a 7:05 p.m. game. The ballpark fun begins early as the first 500 fans will receive cool Spikes t-shirts, presented by P.J. Harrigan's, on T-Shirt Tuesday. Plus, 16 oz. Yuengling and Yuengling Light draft beers will be available for just $2.50 apiece during the Yuengling Happy Hour from 6-7 p.m.

All Bullpen Box seats will also be available on a Buy One, Get One Free basis for the night, presented by the Centre Daily Times.

In addition, fans are encouraged to bring gift cards, brand new clothing, books and toys for children ages 0-11, and other non-perishable items to the Spikes' Donation Drive in partnership with B94.5. All items donated will go to those families displaced by the fire that occurred on Waupelani Drive in State College on July 4.
