IronBirds Outhit Yanks But Fall in Staten Island, 4-1

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Yankees plated two runs on just one hit in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the IronBirds on Tuesday night, 4-1. Aberdeen finished with 10 hits while the Baby Bombers had just three on the night.

After the IronBirds were retired in order in the top of the first, LHP Jorge Rivera took the hill for his second start of the season. From the outset Rivera had trouble finding the zone. Rivera walked SS Claudio Custidio and hit RF Exicardo Cayones. After a Saxon Butler ground out advanced Custidio and Cayones 90-feet, Rivera balked to allow Custidio to score. CF Ravel Santana singled home Cayones later in the inning to put the Baby Bombers in front by two.

Aberdeen threatened to take the lead from the Yankees in the second but faltered. With the bases loaded and one out, C Sam Kimmel singled to right field. 3B Torsten Boss easily scored from third but 2B Creede Simpson was thrown out at home by RF Exicardo Cayones. The Birds loaded the bases up again following Anthony Vega's walk but LF Will Howard grounded out to end the inning.

Staten Island plated a run in the fourth and another in the sixth en route to victory on Tuesday night.

Both starting pitchers lasted just three innings on the night. For Aberdeen, Jorge Rivera allowed two runs on the one hit while walking four and striking out three. Andrew Benak surrendered a run on four hits over three innings in his second professional start.

Rivera (0-1) picked up the loss on the night. Creede Simpson's college teammate, RHP Derek Varnadore (1-0) got the win and RHP Nick Goody closed out the contest for his first save of his professional career.

2B Creede Simpson finished the game 3-for-4 with a double.

The IronBirds will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Yankees on Wednesday night. RHP Mark Blackmar (0-1, 5.79) will take the hill for the Birds while Staten Island will send LHP Tim Flight (0-0, 6.00) to the hill.

First pitch from Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George is set for 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning on the IronBirds Radio Network at 6:45 p.m.
