The Cutters gave up five runs in the first two innings, and couldn't climb out of the hole, losing to Mahoning Valley 6-2.

Jonathan Musser had another tough outing for Williamsport. He picked up his second loss, pitching just 1.1 innings while allowing five runs on three hits while walking four.

Offensively, Brian Pointer continued his hot hitting, extending his hit streak to seven games while going 2-for-3 with a double. He is now 4-for-6 with three extra base hits on this road trip.

Mitch Walding also went 2-for-3 while Chace Numata finished 1-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.

Williamsport scored first when Diego Gonzalez scored in the first on a Numata groundout, but Mahoning Valley answered when Juan Romero hit his league-leading fourth home run of the year.

The Scrappers then scored three more in the second. Musser walked Tyler Naquin with the bases loaded and was pulled in favor of Luis Gonzalez. Charlie Valerio then hit a grounder through the hole into left to make it 5-1.

Luis Gonzalez did a fine job in relief, striking out six batters in 4.2 innings of one-run ball.

His one blemish came when Naquin increased the Scrapper lead to 6-1 with an RBI-double in the fourth.

Williamsport narrowed the gap to 6-2 when Numata scored Pointer, but that would be the end of the Cutters threat, as Williamsport had five runners reach scoring position without coming home.

The Cutters drop to 5-4 and still are just a game back in the division. However, they now find themselves in third place after Auburn moved into a tie with State College in first place.

Williamsport plays the rubber match in Niles, OH Wednesday night. First pitch against the Scrappers is at 7:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com
