LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced today the team had swept the Opening Week New York-Penn League Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards for the first time in franchise history.

David Chester, a hulking first baseman from Oklahoma and a 33rd round selection in the 2011 First Year Player Draft, was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Raynel Velette, a 2011 Spinner, captured the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Chester, who went 0-for-4 on Opening Day, tied a franchise record by recording multi-hit games in each of the next six, finishing the week with a .448 batting average (13-for-29), four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and eight runs scored.

Velette, who made a brief June cameo with the Greenville Drive pitching out of the bullpen, joined the Spinners just after Opening Day and was nearly unhittable in his return to the Lowell rotation. The 20-year-old right hander allowed just one hit, and no walks, over six shutout innings at Connecticut in his lone start of the week, to capture the honors.

Chester is the first Offensive Player of the Week for the Spinners since Garin Cecchini, who captured the award for the week of July 25, 2011, while Velette was the first pitcher honored since Miguel Celestino, the week of August 8, 2010.

The Spinners are currently in the midst of a six-game road trip through Tri-City and Vermont before returning to LeLacheur for a brief three-game homestand July 1-3. Tickets for those games and all 2012 Lowell Spinners home games are available now at www.LowellSpinners.com .
