Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Auburn, NY - The Auburn Doubledays completed a three-game sweep of the Aberdeen IronBirds on Friday night at Falcon Park. The IronBirds dropped the opener of a double-header 4-1, and then fell in game two 8-3.
In game one, the Doubledays took a lead in the first. Caleb Ramsey and Bryce Ortega reached on back-to-back walks. They moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Matt Skole knocked in Ramsey on a sacrifice fly to left field. Justin Miller grounded out to short, scoring Ortega and making it 2-0.
Auburn doubled their advantage in the fifth. The Doubledays loaded the bases against IronBirds starter Matt Hobgood. He was taken out in favor of Ryan Berry, who induced a 1-2-3 groundball double play from Russell Moldenhauer. A passed ball, however, allowed Skole to score from third and Miller to move up to third. Angelberth Montilla drove in Miller with an RBI-single making it 4-0.
Aberdeen got on the scoreboard in the sixth. The first three hitters of the inning walked. With one man down, Austin Knight grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Martin Serrata from third.
Wirkin Estevez (5-2) got the win after tossing five shutout innings. Hobgood (0-5) took the loss in game one. Colin Bates (2) pitched the final two innings scoreless for the save.
In game two, the Doubledays once again jumped on the scoreboard in the first. Billy Burns led off the first with a single. He eventually was knocked in by Miller, making it 1-0.
Auburn tacked on three more runs in the second inning. With two on and nobody out, Jeremy Mayo slapped a two-run double to right-center field. A batter later, Burns knocked in Mayo with an RBI-single.
The Doubledays made it a six-run game in the fifth. Ortega reached on a walk. He stole second and scored on a Skole single. Carlos Alvarez knocked Skole in on an RBI-double.
The IronBirds finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Joe Velleggia led off the inning with a single. Wynston Sawyer doubled to the left field wall. Connor Narron knocked them both in with a two-run single.
Auburn got the two runs back in their half of the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Miller hit a two-run single.
Velleggia would knock in Knight on an RBI-double in the seventh, making it an 8-3 final score.
Nathan Karns (2-2) got the win after tossing five shutout innings. Trent Howard (3-2) took the loss. Travis Henke (1) was credited with a save.
The IronBirds will board a bus tonight and head to Norwich, CT where they'll begin a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers. Jose Mota (1-1, 5.81) will get the start for the IronBirds. He'll go up against left-hander Matt Crouse (3-1, 3.64). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
