Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - A

four run eighth inning propelled the Connecticut Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

The inning started with a leadoff double by catcher Zach Maggard.

At this time, Tigers' Manager Andrew Graham went to his bench and brought on P.J. Polk to pinch run.

After that, Yankees' reliever Philip Wetherell made his first of two costly errors.

On Matt Perry's sacrifice bunt attempt, Wetherell threw the ball into right field, allowing Polk to score and Perry to go all the way to third base.

Eugenio Suarez drove in Perry with a RBI single to right field, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.

The Tigers added two more insurance runs before the end of the inning; on an RBI single by Tyler Collins and, in part due to Wetherell's second error, a RBI groundout by Aaron Westlake.

For the second straight night, Connecticut received sterling starting pitching.

Tonight, Brennan Smith threw seven shutout innings. The right hander from Sandusky, OH surrendered five hits and struck out five.

Smith lowered his ERA to 1.88, good for second in the New York-Penn League.

He recorded a no-decision.

Nick Avila was the winning pitcher, throwing two no-hit innings in relief of Smith.

Wetherell took the loss for Staten Island.

The Tigers are home again tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium, welcoming in the Aberdeen Ironbirds, New York-Penn League affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, for the first game of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
