Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have successfully pushed Seth Schwindenhammer through to the Final Four of the fifth annual "Minors Moniker Madness," a competition that leads to the inevitable: Seth Schwindenhammer is the best name in Minor League Baseball.

A 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star, "The Hammer" currently leads the Spinners with nine home runs, ranking second in the league.

"We could list 15 reasons, one for every letter in what would be the Major League's longest last name, as to why Hammer should win but we feel pretty strongly that the name does all the explaining needed," said Spinners Director of Media Relations Jon Boswell. "Hammer is going to nail the competition."

A second-year Spinner, Schwindenhammer reached the finals of the 2010 competition before falling just short against Rowdy Hardy, then a Kansas City Royals prospect. The competition is stiff as he faces Texas Rangers prospect Rougned Odor, a No. 1 seed in the Farmer Works Bracket.

"The competition in this round stinks," said Hammer Campaign Manager Matt Steinberg. "It permeates the air from Spokane to Lowell and the Hammer is determined to nail down a trip to the finals."

Schwindenhammer, a native of Peoria, Ill. who attended the same high school as recent 600 home run hitter Jim Thome, was a fifth round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. In 49 games, Hammer is batting .220 with 9 home runs and 29 RBI, batting .448 when he makes contact with the baseball, striking fear into opposing New York-Penn League pitchers.

After recently winning the NYPL All-Star Game Skills Contest on a last swing home run, Schwindenhammer is ready for another title in his belt.

Voting in the Final Four of the contest is underway and runs through August 22. Fans can vote as often as they'd like by visiting http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/madness and selecting the players they wish to advance.
