Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Brault cruises through five innings IronBirds' starter LHP Steven Brault pitched well in his professional debut. He went five innings plus two batters, allowed six hits, two runs (both earned), striking out five. He did not walk a batter. He struck out the side in the bottom of the second inning and did not allow a runner past second base until two batters before he was removed from the game.
Nine more strikeouts The IronBirds' pitching staff struck out nine more Cyclones last night, giving them 48 on the season. They are now the league leaders in strikeouts, three clear of Hudson Valley, who is in second with 45. In addition to Brault's five, Janser Severino added three, and Jimmy Yacabonis added one.
Hector Veloz keeps it going IronBirds' third baseman Hector Veloz has now hit safely in all five games this season. He was three for four last night, with three singles and an RBI. Veloz is now batting .474 with nine hits in 19 at-bats.
Mancini, Wynns doing their part IronBirds' first baseman Trey Mancini and catcher Austin Wynns, who were both added last Wednesday, helped out the Aberdeen offense. Mancini led off the second inning with a single, and would later come around to score when Wynns would serve an RBI single into right-center field, giving the IronBirds a 1-0 lead at the time.
On the mound tonight... RHP Sebastian Vader, the IronBirds' Opening Day starter, will get the ball once again tonight. Vader went five innings, allowed four hits, three runs (two earned), struck out three and did not walk a batter on Monday night. Vader took the loss however, as the IronBirds fell 5-0 to the Hudson Valley Renegades. The Cyclones will counter with RHP Seth Lugo. Lugo missed all of 2012 with a lower back injury after spending 11 games with Kingsport in 2011. He was a34th round pick of the Mets in the 2011 draft. Lugo was expected to pitch Friday night, but a Tuesday rain out pushed all of the Brooklyn pitchers back an extra day.
On the tour of New York After tonight's game, the IronBirds will visit the Staten Island Yankees for three beginning on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Yankees are 2-2 on the season, beating Brooklyn twice, while falling to Hudson Valley twice as well. The IronBirds then travel home to play the Cyclones for two and the Yankees for three at Ripken Stadium the end of next week.
