Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - After 20 consecutive scoreless innings from Lowell Spinners' starting pitchers to start the season, the Tri-City ValleyCats were able to solve the riddle, scoring four times against starter Ty Buttrey, handing the Spinners a 6-3 defeat in front of 5,238 fans Saturday night at LeLacheur Park.

Tri-City (5-1) finally broke through against Buttrey in the top of the second inning. Dan Gulbransen led off the inning with a double. After two quick outs, Buttrey had Ryan Dineen at 0-2 before Dineen earned a walk to extend the inning and a double steal by Gilbransen and Dineen brought home the game's first run. Chan Moon followed with a single to center, scoring Dineen to give the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead.

Lowell (3-2) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Kendrick Perkins led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. Reed Gragnani followed with a single to left, advancing Perkins to third, and a fielder's choice from Carlos Asuaje brought home Perkins to cut the lead in half.

The ValleyCats would tack on two runs in the fourth inning, chasing Buttrey from the game. A one-out walk by Jon Kemmer, followed by a single from Luis Alvarez and walk to Dineen loaded the bases. A walk by Moon forced in a run and Buttrey was replaced by Jonathan Aro, who allowed a sacrifice fly to Tony Kemp, pushing the lead to 4-1.

After the ValleyCats tacked on a run in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Conrad Gregor, the Spinners pulled back within three on a home run by Kevin Mager to lead off the sixth.

Tri-City added an additional insurance run in the eighth against Aro, while the Spinners would add one of their own on an RBI groundout by Perkins in the bottom half of the inning for what would hold as a 6-3 final.

Buttrey (0-1, 10.80), who's scoreless first inning extended the Spinners starting pitcher scoreless streak to 21 innings, struggled in his New York-Penn League debut. He allowed four runs on four hits, walking four without striking out a batter. Aro followed with 4.1 innings of long-relief, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out five. Jack McGeary finished the game for the Spinners with 1.1 scoreless, striking out two.

Offensively, the Spinners were led by Mager and Perkins who each had two hits and an RBI, with Mager's home run the first of the season by a Spinner. Manuel Margot, Gragnani, Williams Jerez and Carlos Asuaje also collected hits for the Spinners.

The Spinners now head off on the first extended road-trip of the 2013 season beginning Sunday in Burlington, Vermont against the Vermont Lake Monsters. Heri Quevedo, rehabbing from Hi-A Salem, will get the start and be followed to the mound by Sergio Gomez (0-0, 0.00) for a 5:05 first pitch.
