
IronBirds Fall to ValleyCats, 5-1

Troy, NY - After the Aberdeen IronBirds pitched a two-hit shutout against Tri-City last night, the ValleyCats returned the favor Sunday evening. Tri-City limited Aberdeen to just one run on six hits as the ValleyCats beat the IronBirds 5-1.
Tri-City struck first in the second inning. Aberdeen starter Trent Howard walked the leadoff man Miles Hamblin. The next batter, Zach Johnson, reached on an error when Connor Narron misplayed a ground ball. Bubby Williams and Hector Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles, scoring the ValleyCats' first run. With the bases loaded, Drew Muren bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, knocking in a second run.
Howard left the game after the third. He surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.
The ValleyCats extended their lead in the sixth. With two men out, Zach Johnson struck a solo home run to left-center field.
Strong let in another run in the seventh. Rodriguez led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Drew Muren singled to left, moving Rodriguez to third. Jacke Healey grounded out to third base, scoring Rodriguez and making it 4-0.
2011 Baltimore Orioles 34th round pick Zach Fowler made his IronBirds debut in the eighth inning. The left-handed reliever surrendered a two-out double to Hamblin. He scored on an RBI-single from Johnson.
The IronBirds scored their one run in the ninth inning. Wynston Sawyer led off the ninth with a single. He scored on Narron's RBI-double.
Jonas Dufek (2-0) got the win after pitching six shutout innings. Howard (1-1) took the loss.
The IronBirds and ValleyCats will conclude their three-game series Monday evening at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Aberdeen will have 2011 third-round pick Mike Wright (0-0, 0.00) on the bump. He'll go against fellow right-hander Euris Quezada (0-2, 9.64). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
