Four-run first dooms 'Birds on Opening Night

Summary

The Ironbirds fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades on Opening Night at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium. Four runs in the first inning set the tone for the Renegades 7-2 win.

First Inning

The Renegades scored four runs in the first inning on five hits. Michael Russell's two-run homer got the scoring started. Nic Wilson and Cade Gotta both followed with RBI singles to give the Renegades a four-run lead after the first half inning of the season.

Settling In

Aberdeen starter Jean Cosme settled in after the rough first, retiring the next eleven batters, including five strikeouts before allowing two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Manny Sanchez and Hector Montes.

One More For Good Measure

Michael Russell doubled to lead off the seventh and later scored on the second RBI of the night from Hector Montez to make it 7-0.

Better Late Than Never

The Ironbirds scored two runs in the ninth with two outs, thanks in part to a dropped pop up by Russell at short. Cedric Mullins followed with an RBI double and Drew Turbin drove him in with a single. However, it was too little, too late as the 'Birds fell to Hudson Valley on Opening Night.
