Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Aberdeen, MD (6/19/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades opened up the 2015 New York-Penn League season in fine fashion as they defeated their McNamara Division rivals, the Aberdeen IronBirds, by a score of 7-2 on Friday night at Ripken Stadium.

The Renegades sent nine men to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored four runs off Aberdeen's starting pitcher Jean Cosme (0-1). With one out, left fielder Jose Paez singled and came home on shortstop Michael Russell's two-run home run. Then with two outs and after right fielder Manny Sanchez and catcher Taylor Hawkins reached base earlier in the inning with a walk and a single respectively, both came around to score on RBI singles from first baseman Nic Wilson and designated hitter Cade Gotta, giving the 'Gades a four-run lead.

Hudson Valley scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead off an RBI double by Sanchez and an RBI single by third baseman Hector Montes. That would be all the run support that Renegades started Yonny Chirinos (1-0) would need as he earned the win after throwing five scoreless innings and striking out six batters while allowing just four hits.

Russell continued his strong night as he doubled off Aberdeen's relief pitcher Tanner Scott in the top of the seventh inning and came around to score on Montes's two-out RBI single. Both Montes and Russell finished the night with two hits and two RBI each.

Brad Wallace came out of the bullpen for Hudson Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning and was impressive in his season debut as he did not allow a run in three innings of work and struck out two batters. Justin McCalvin came in to pitch for Hudson Valley in the ninth inning and allowed two un-earned runs on a pair of RBI doubles by Cedric Mullins and Drew Turbin. Cosme took the loss for Aberdeen, allowing six runs on six hits in four and two thirds innings.

Notes: Dating back to 2005, the Renegades and the IronBirds have faced each other to begin every New York-Penn League regular season. With tonight's win, Hudson Valley holds a 6-5 advantage in season openers against Aberdeen and have won the last four consecutive meetings.
