Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lowell Spinners scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to build an 11-0 lead and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 13-7 in the New York-Penn League season opener at historic Centennial Field on Friday night.
After scoring a pair of runs in the first inning off of Vermont starter Jordan Schwartz (0-1), the Spinners sent 15 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored the nine runs with the help of five hits, five walks and a hit batter in the inning. Josh Ockimey, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI in the game, had a two-run triple in the second and Bryan Hudson (3-for-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI) added a two-run single.
The Lake Monsters responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning off Lowell starter Luis Ramos. Lana Akau got Vermont on the board with a two-run double and Argenis Raga smacked a grand-slam homer to leftfield later in the inning to cut the deficit to 11-6. It was the 16th grand slam in Lake Monsters history and the 1st in a home opener since Dee Brown in 2005.
Brandon Show (1-0) allowed two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory for Lowell, which has now won two straight season openers against the Lake Monsters (7-2 at Lowell last season) and is 6-1 all-time against Vermont in season openers. Lake Monster relievers Tyler Willman Jesus Rivs and Victor Veliz combined to each allow an unearned run with five total hits and 9 strikeouts over the final 7 2/3 innings.
Seong-min Kim went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Vermont, while Raga, Akau, Trace Loehr and Shawn Duinkerk each had two of Vermont's 13 hits on the night. The Lake Monsters are now 7-15 all-time in season openers, including four straight losses, and 10-12 all-time in home openers.
The Spinners and Lake Monsters will play the second of the three-game series on Saturday night beginning at 6:05 pm. One lucky fan will win a $500 Carhartt Gift Card from Lenny's Shoe & Apprel and there will also be the first of three post-game fireworks shows this season.
