Lowell Spinners News Release
BURLINGTON, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners started the 2015 season with a flurry of offense, battering the Vermont Lake Monsters for 11 runs in the season's first two innings before settling in to hold on for a convincing 13-7 win to begin the 2015 season Friday night at Centennial Field.
Lowell (1-0) got off to an early start after Bryan Hudson started the Spinners season on the right foot with a lead off single. After a two-out walk by Zach Kapstein put runners on the corners, Josh Ockimey delivered an RBI double on the first pitch he saw to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch would bring home Kapstein to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.
Vermont (0-1) threatened immediately in the bottom half of the inning after a Victor Acosta error allowed Trace Loehr to reach second to lead off the inning. After a walk and an infield single loaded the bases, Spinners starter Luis Ramos battled back to strike out the next three batters to keep the Lake Monsters off the board.
The Spinners offense erupted in the second inning as the team batted around plating nine, jumping out to an 11-0 lead. Hudson delivered the first key hit, scoring two on an RBI single. After a Jeremy Rivera RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0, Ockimey delivered a two-run triple and Acosta atoned for his first inning error with an RBI double of his own to give the Spinners a 9-0 lead. After Vermont starter Jordan Schwartz was chased, the Spinners added two more runs on a Lake Monsters errors and a pair of wild pitches to stake Ramos to an 11-0 lead.
After dancing around trouble thanks to six strikeouts, Ramos would falter in the third, allowing six runs capped by an Argenis Raga grand slam to pull the Lake Monsters within five before Brandon Show escaped trouble out of the bullpen.
The Spinners would expand the lead in the fifth on another Ockimey double, pushing ahead, 12-6. Hudson would score on an error by Raga in the seventh to give the Spinners a 13-6 lead, and though Vermont would gain a run back in the eighth, they would pull no closer for a 13-7 final.
Ockimey was the offensive star for the Spinners in his NYPL debut, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI. Hudson and Jordon Austin each added three hit nights, while Kapstein, rehabbing with the Spinners, scored three runs, and Acosta added two doubles on the night as part of the Spinners 12-hit attack.
Ramos worked in-and-out of trouble, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out six over 2.2 innings. Show (1-0, 0.00) stopped the bleeding with 3.1 innings of shutout relief, limiting Vermont to two hits and two walks while striking out three. Randy Perez allowed a run on four hits, striking out one over two innings, while Enfember Martinez hurled a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
The Spinners and Lake Monsters will continue the season opening series Saturday evening with a 6:05 first pitch. Rehabbing left-handed pitcher Danny Rosenbaum gets the ball for the Spinners as they look to start the season strong.
