Brooklyn Beats Baby Bombers, 3-2 In Extras

STATEN ISLAND, NY "" June 19, 2015 "" It may have taken a little longer than usual, but the result was all-too-familiar for the Brooklyn Cyclones as they defeated the rival Staten Island Yankees by the score of 3-2 in 12 innings. With the win the Cyclones improved to 12-3 on Opening Day, including 10-2 against the Yankees.

After the Cyclones and Yankees matched zeroes in the first inning, the Staten Island Yankees drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. Yankees third baseman Drew Bridges worked a leadoff walk before Jhalan Jackson, the Yankees 7th round selection in the recent MLB Draft, connected on the first pitch he saw as a professional and sent a screaming line drive over the left field wall to give the Baby Bombers a 2-0 advantage. That is all the offense that Brooklyn starter Tyler Badamo would allow however, as he retired the next 12 batters he faced, giving the Cyclones the chance to claw their way back into the game. And that is exactly what Brooklyn would do.

In the top of the fourth, Brooklyn's bats got going thanks to a two-out rally. 3B Pedro Perez started the threat with a double down the left field line. C Jose Garcia follow suit with a perfectly placed single that bounced off of the first base bag and eluded Ryan Krill, who had been perfectly positioned to make the final out of the inning before the ricochet. The single put runners on the corners for CF Tucker Tharp who connected on a booming double into the right-center field gap. Perez scored easily, and Garcia was waved home all the way from first, but a great relay throw from Yankees 2B Thairo Estrada nailed the Brooklyn catcher at the plate and kept Staten Island's lead at 2-1.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Brooklyn drew even in the top of the sixth. 1B Michael Katz started the rally with a walk and moved to second with one out thanks to a wild pitch by Staten Island hurler Yoel Espinal. Zach Mathieu hit a seemingly meaningless ground ball to shortstop for the second out of the inning, but Katz aggressively moved up to third base. That would prove to be a critical play as two pitches later, Espinal uncorked another wild pitch, allowing Katz to score and knot the score at 2-2.

That's how the score remained as both the Yankees and Cyclones failed to capitalize on scoring chances in the late innings. Staten Island had the go-ahead run on third base on two occasions- in the sixth and seventh - but did not score. Brooklyn loaded the bases in the top of the 8th with one out, but Mathieu and Pedro Perez both struck out to end the threat.

In the top of the 11th, the Cyclones looked like they might take their first lead of the game after Zach Mathieu started the frame with a double. After Branden Kaupe pinch ran for Mathieu, he advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting the go-ahead run 90-feet away with nobody out. But once again, Brooklyn failed to push the run across after Pedro Perez grounded out and Tharp and Alfredo Reyes struck out to end the threat.

But in the top of the 12th Brooklyn was finally able to break through. LF Enmanuel Zabala started the frame with a leadoff walk and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from 2B Vinny Siena . With the go-ahead run in scoring position, RF Michael Bernal took advantage of the opportunity with a line drive single to left that plated Zabala and gave Brooklyn a 3-2 edge.

RHP Gaither Bumgardner (1-0) tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame and the Cyclones held on for a hard fought 3-2 victory in the 2015 season opener.

The Cyclones and Yankees will head to Coney Island tomorrow night for the middle game of the three game series at MCU Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM with RHP Gaby Almonte making the start for Brooklyn.
