Connecticut Tigers Fall in Season Opener

NORWICH, CT-The 2015 Connecticut Tigers (0-1) dropped their 2015 season opener at Dodd Stadium to the Tri-City ValleyCats (1-0) 3-2 in 10 innings before a CT Tigers record crowd of 6,184.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Jose Azocar led off the frame with a double and scored one batter later when Adrian Alfaro single. Alfaro did not get credit for an RBI however as Tri-City left fielder Antony Melendez bobbled the ball allowing Azocar to score.

Tri-City did not trail for long as the visiting ValleyCats scoring two quick runs in the top of the fourth. Tiger's starter Chase Edwards (5 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 strikeouts) walked the first two batters in the inning. Edwards was nearly able to pitch around the two walks but with two-outs in the inning Tri-City third basemen Cesar Carrasco lined a double deep into the left center field gap plating both runs and giving the ValleyCats a 2-1 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth. Third basemen Jose Zambrano and second basemen Brett Pirtle started the inning off with singles. Yeyfry Del Rosario entered the game with one out in relief of Elieser Hernandez (2.2 IP, 1 run, 6 strikouts) but allowed a two-out single to Corey Baptist to tie the game at 2-2.

After neither side scored in the ninth the game went to the 10th inning and with Jack Fischer on the mound for the Connecticut Tigers the ValleyCats where able to surge ahead. With two-outs, designated hitter Anthony Hermelyn singled to left scoring Melendez who singled to start the inning.

Staked to a 3-2 lead Juan Santos entered the game and pitched a perfect 10th to record his first save of the season and give Tri-City an opening night victory. Del Rosario picked up the win.
