WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The IronBirds comeback effort fell just short in the top of the ninth against the Hudson Valley Renegades on Thursday night. Trailing by four runs entering the ninth, the Birds plated three runs in the frame but RHP Marcus Jensen struck out 1B Christian Walker and SS Joel Hutter in succession to end the game.
The Renegades struck early on Thursday night. Facing RHP David Richardson, CF Joey Rickard led off the home half of the first with a double into left-center field. After a Justin O'Connor fly out to right moved Rickard to third, 2B Tommy Coyle hit a RBI groundout to third.
LF Marty Gantt hit a towering home run in the second inning to put the Renegades up 2-0. Hudson Valley scored another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
David Richardson exited Thursday night's game after 4.2 innings of work. Richardson allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking two.
Richardson's counterpart, LHP Sean Bierman, threw five scoreless frames. Bierman struck out four and walked none.
Aberdeen finally got on the board in the seventh inning. With two outs and DH Creede Simpson on first, 2B Tommy Winegardner hit a RBI triple down the right field.
The score remained 5-1 entering the ninth inning. RHP Ryan Garton entered out of the Renegades bullpen. RF Lucas Herbst led the inning off with a walk. After pinch-hitter Anthony Vega struck out, 2B Tommy Winegardner reached on an infield single and CF Roderick Bernadina followed with a walk. With the bases now loaded, Garton uncorked a wild pitch. Herbst scored and Winegardner and Bernadina each advanced 90-feet. 3B Torsten Boss cut the IronBirds' deficit to one with a two-run single to centerfield.
Following the Boss single, RHP Marcus Jensen relieved Garton. Jensen struck out Christian Walker and Joel Hutter to end the IronBirds' comeback efforts.
Sean Bierman (2-1) notched the win on the night while David Richardson (1-2) got the loss. Marcus Jensen picked up his team-leading fourth save of the year.
At the plate, Christian Walker finished the evening 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
The IronBirds and Renegades will close out a brief two-game series in Wappingers Falls on Friday night. RHP Mark Blackmar (2-1, 3.04) will take the hill for Aberdeen while Hudson Valley will turn to RHP Taylor Guerrieri (0-1, 0.56).
First pitch from Dutchess Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network set to begin at 6:50 p.m.
