BURLINGTON, VT --- The Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats continued their strong start to the 2012 New York-Penn League season with a 6-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday night at historic Centennial Field in the first of four straight games, the first two at Vermont, between the two teams.ÃÂ

Tri-City added another run in the fourth off Vermont starter Tyler Vail on an RBI single from Preston Tucker for a 3-0 advantage. Vermont got a run in the bottom of the third on a John Wooten RBI single and the Lake Monsters had a chance for more with the bases loaded and just one out, but Tri-City starter Vincent Velasquez got Wilfredo Solano to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The ValleyCats added three more runs in the fifth, including a Jobaun Morales RBI single for a 6-1 lead. The Lake Monsters got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an Austin Booker sacrifice fly and added another run in the seventh on a Chris Bostick RBI infield single to cut the deficit to 6-3. Vermont got the tying run to the plate in the ninth after a pair of one-out walks, but reliever Blake Ford retired the final two batters of the game to record his 10th save of the season.
Vail (0-1) allowed five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss, while Velasquez (4-1) two runs on three hits over five innings for the win. Sclafani and Tucker both had two hits for Tri-City (23-8), which has the best record in the NY-Penn League and leads the Stedler Division by seven games over Vermont (16-15).
Wooten had two hits for the Lake Monsters and Booker had a single in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. The loss was the seventh in the last nine games for the Lake Monsters, who also had a four-game winning streak at Centennial Field snapped with the loss.
The quick two-game homestand for Vermont concludes on Friday night at 7:05 pm against Tri-City. The Lake Monsters ÃÂ will celebrate a "Summer of Love" with a tie-dye baseball giveaway to the first 750 fans sponsored by Ben & Jerrys and Linking Learning To Life.
