New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Yusaku Iriki pitched seven shutout innings to record his first victory since July 18, and David Smith belted a two-run home run in the first inning to stretch his season-best hitting streak to 12 games in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' 6-2 win over the Harrisburg Senators Thursday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Iriki (2-3) scattered five hits, allowed only one base runner to reach third base, struck out four and walked one in pitching a season-high seven innings for the second consecutive start.
Following a lead-off single by Manny Mayorson (2-for-4, 2 R) in the bottom of the first inning, Smith (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) clobbered a Garrett Mock offering onto the patio in left-centerfield for his 16th home run of the season, the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game, giving New Hampshire (59-58) a 2-0 lead.
Mayorson singled again in the sixth inning and scored when Harrisburg third baseman Brandon Powell committed a fielding error and a throwing error on a Smith grounder, giving the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead.
Ryan Klosterman (1-for-4, RBI) drove in Chip Cannon (0-for-2, 2 BB, R) with a seventh-inning single and the Fisher Cats added two more runs against Senators' reliever Zechry Zinicola in the eighth inning when Erik Kratz (0-for-3, BB, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk and Dustin Majewski (3-for-4, RBI) capped a three-hit game with a run-scoring single to right field.
Harrisburg (40-78) broke up the shut out with two outs in the top of the ninth inning when Steve Mortimer connected for a two-run home run, his sixth, off Tracy Thorpe.
Mock (0-4) allowed four runs -three earned- on six hits in seven innings to suffer his fourth loss. He recorded a season-high seven strike outs and walked one.
The Fisher Cats moved to within 3 ½ games of second-place Portland in the Eastern League Northern Division standings after the Sea Dogs suffered a 10-7 loss to the Altoona Curve Thursday afternoon.
The Fisher Cats open a three-game series against the Curve Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Right-hander Kyle Yates (6-7, 4.62) takes the mound against Altoona right-hander Luis Munoz (10-4, 3.49) at 7:05pm.
