DES MOINES, Iowa - Five players scored in double figures for the Iowa Wolves in a 124-109 victory over the Grand Rapids Gold Monday night at Well Fargo Arena.
For the second-straight game, Iowa (3-0) was led in scoring by Minnesota two-way guard McKinley Wright IV who scored a game-high 30 points and added eight rebounds and seven assists. Wright went 10-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three and knocked down 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Timberwolves' assignee guard Leandro Bolmaro had 22 points, all of which came after halftime. Bolmaro drilled a game-high five three-pointers.
Grand Rapids (1-2) was paced by guard Nik Stauskas' 27 points. Forward Matt Ryan followed with 23 points off the bench. Marcus Burk also came off the bench and had 17 points. Four others scored in double digits for the Gold. Grand Rapids knocked down 14-of-37 from beyond the arc.
The teams went back-and-forth in the first two quarters as neither team led by more than six points. Wright scored four-straight points going into halftime for Iowa, which led 59-53 after two quarter. The Wolves got buckets from forward Brian Bowen II and forward Chris Silva, who scored 16 before fouling out, to start the third period. Later in the third, Wright finished a tough layup and Bolmaro made a deep three-pointer, his first points of the game, to force Grand Rapids to call timeout with Iowa up 16 points.
Midway through the final quarter, Grand Rapids pulled to five points down with center Petr Cornelie's layup. But Silva made a free throw for two points and Bolmaro answered again with another three-pointer to push Iowa's lead back to 10 and help pull away for the victory.
Bowen, who earlier in the day was named to the Team USA World Cup Qualifying team roster, finished with 19 points. Guard Isaiah Briscoe chipped in 16 points and six assists off the bench. Iowa shot 48.9 percent (43-of-88) from the floor and made 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) free throws.
The teams will play again Wednesday, November 17 at Wells Fargo at 7 p.m. CT.
