Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Iowa Energy (8-10) won 91-83 over the Austin Spurs (14-5) Wednesday night at the NBA D-League Showcase.
The Energy were led by Memphis Grizzlies assignees James Ennis with 19 points and seven rebounds and Jarell Martin with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Stepheson posted a double-double 12 points and 16 rebounds. The Spurs were led by Demetri McCamey with 14 points and three rebounds.
It was a close start to the first quarter with the Energy and Spurs exchanging the lead five times to begin the game. The Energy's physical play led to 10 points in the paint and eight second chance points to eventually open up a lead over the Spurs. Martin and Ennis led the Energy to a 25-21 advantage heading into the second quarter. Iowa took control in the second to extend their lead to 14 points for a 47-33 advantage at halftime.
The Energy continued to control the game in the third quarter. Strong defensive play by Stepheson with three blocks and 13 total rebounds combined with the offense of Ennis and Martin led Iowa to extend the lead to 23 points mid-way through the third. Austin would go on a mini-run to end the third and trim the lead down to 12 points as Iowa led 71-59 heading into the fourth. Iowa turnovers helped the Spurs continue to chip away at the lead as Austin was down only four points with 3:21 to play. The Energy tightened up their play in the closing minutes and won 91-83.
The Energy play game two at the NBA D-League Showcase in Santa Cruz on Friday at 9:30pm. Iowa's next home game is Jan. 12 against Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. followed by home games on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15.
