Iowa Wild News Release
DES MOINES, IOWA - Iowa Wild (31-26-10-6; 78 points) lost to Milwaukee Admirals (38-30-4-1; 81 points) by a score of 3-2 in overtime at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena Sunday afternoon.
Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 12:24 mark of the first period. Defenseman Jack Dougherty sent a long-range shot toward Wild goaltender Niklas Svedberg (34 saves), who made the initial save. But the rebound found its way to forward Justin Kirkland and he buried his shot for his seventh of the season. Kirkland's goal was the only score of the first period, despite the Wild outshooting the Admirals 12-6 in the opening frame.
Iowa answered back at 9:55 in the second period as forward Gerry Mayhew recorded his 15th goal of the season and second in as many games. Defenseman Zach Palmquist ripped a shot from the blue line and Mayhew tipped the puck past goaltender Tony Grosenick (18 saves). Forward Kyle Rau earned the secondary assist on Mayhew's tally.
Through 40 minutes of play, the score was tied at 1-1 but Milwaukee held the 21-14 shot advantage.
Wild forward Sam Anas notched his team-leading 26th goal of the season as he gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at 15:22 in the final frame. Anas snuck his way to the bottom of the left circle, where defenseman Gustav Bouramman slipped him the puck and Anas pushed it through Grosenick's five-hole to take the lead. Anas' goal was his third goal of the weekend, while Bouramman's assist was his first professional point. Forward Zack Mitchell registered the secondary assist on the score.
Just 85 seconds later, the Admirals found the back of the net to draw the game even at 2-2. Defenseman Frederic Allard wristed a shot from atop the left faceoff circle and beat Svedberg on his glove side. His goal was the last tally of the period and the teams headed to overtime for the third time of the season series.
At 1:33 in the extra frame, Admirals forward Trevor Smith capitalized on a 2-on-1, working the puck around Svedberg to give the home side the 3-2 victory. Milwaukee finished the game leading Iowa 37-20 in shots.
Iowa is back at home Tuesday, as the team takes on Rockford IceHogs. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
