(Charlotte, NC)-The Hershey Bears surrendered three goals in the second period and suffered a 3-1 loss to Charlotte Checkers on Sunday at the Bojangles' Coliseum. The contest was Hershey's final road game of the 2017-18 campaign.
After a scoreless first period, defender Brendan Kichton gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead at 2:59 of the middle stanza. The defender skated in from the point and one-timed a Julien Gauthier pass into the net past Hershey goaltender Pheonix Copley. The goal was Kichton's fourth of the season.
Hershey ran into penalty trouble shortly following, as Zach Sill was issued a five-minute major for boarding and ejected from the game at 3:04. Penalties to Tyler Lewington and 3:29 and Jonas Siegenthaler at 7:12 put Hershey down two men, but the club's penalty kill stood tall, finishing the afternoon 7-of-7.
Following the failed power play attempts, Charlotte added two more goals before the second period ended. After scoring five points the night prior, Janne Kuokkanen scored his 11th goal of the season, tallying on a rebound that Copley wasn't able to handle at 11:10.
After assisting on Kuokkanen's goal, defender Josiah Didier struck for a tally of his own, beating Copley on a screen shot from the right point at 14:33 to make it 3-0. The goal finished a second period that saw Charlotte out shoot Hershey, 20-5.
Chris Bourque would pull the Bears within two goals, scoring his 17th goal of the season, and third tally on the weekend at 5:20 of the third period. Jeremy Langlois fed Bourque in the low-slot, and the winger snapped a shot off the crossbar and past Charlotte goaltender Callum Booth. The assist gave Langlois helpers in four straight games.
Booth stopped 23 shots to earn his second AHL victory. The Checkers out shot the Bears 32-24 in the game, and held the Bears to 0-for-4 on the power play. Hershey's record slides to 29-36-4-5 with the loss.
The Bears return to the Giant Center for the final two games of the regular season this upcoming weekend. Hershey hosts Bridgeport for Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday, Apr. 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at HersheyBears.com.
