Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - One day after an offensive explosion on both sides, the Round Rock Express (14-12) was unable to carry momentum into Tuesday afternoon as the Iowa Cubs (9-15) knocked off the E-Train, 7-2.
The Express bats could not find the same "pop" as last night, managing just two runs against an Iowa pitching staff that entered Tuesday's game with a 5.94 ERA, second-to-last in the PCL.
The I-Cubs used the long ball to touch up Express starter Collin Balester in the third. After retiring the first batter on strikes, left fielder Brent Lillibridge homered to give Iowa an early advantage. Center fielder, and former Express outfielder, Brian Bogusevic followed with a double, putting the pressure on Balester who then gave up a two-run shot to another ex-Express, first baseman Brad Nelson. Nelson entered the game hitting .333 in four games against Round Rock this season, collecting four RBI against his former team.
Iowa added to its lead while keeping the Express bats quiet throughout the first half of the game. With two outs in the fourth, Bogusevic continued to torch Balester, launching his second double of the day. After walking Nelson, Balester's wild pitch allowed the runners to advance to second and third. Another walk to catcher J.C. Boscan loaded the bases and the ninth batter in the order, shortstop Edwin Maysonet cashed in, doubling in all three runners with two outs as the Cubs' lead reached six.
Balester was chased from the game after 3.2 innings of work. It was his shortest start of the season as he tied his season-high in runs, allowing six on the afternoon.
The six-run deficit didn't slow down first baseman Chris McGuiness' bat as he blasted a solo shot in the top of the fifth, his team-leading fifth of the season.
Cubs starter Guillermo Moscoso scattered three hits over 5.0 innings, the only blemish being McGuiness' homer, as he struck out six and handed a 6-1 lead to the bullpen.
The Express added a two-out run in the seventh as McGuiness and second baseman Greg Miclat singled consecutively to put runners on first and second. Catcher Jose Felix delivered a RBI single that brought McGuiness across the plate for the second time on the day, making the score 6-2. That would be all of the scoring on the afternoon for Round Rock as the I-Cubs bullpen permitted just one hit over the final two innings.
Iowa would tack on one more run off reliever Yoshinori Tateyama in the eighth to make the final score 7-2. Balester suffered the loss, his fourth straight as he dropped to 1-4 on the season while Guillermo Moscoso earned the win in his first start.
Game three of the four-game series in Iowa gets underway tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. The E-Train will send Josh Lindblom (3-0, 1.90 ERA) to the hill as he will be opposed by I-Cubs starter Chris Rusin (1-2, 5.08 ERA). The Express returns home on Friday to face the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) at 7:05 p.m. Budweiser Friday Fireworks will light up the Central Texas sky following the conclusion of the game.
