Jurica Delivers Walk-Off Hit in Grizzlies' 8-7 Extra-Inning Win
April 30, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Carter Jurica delivered in the bottom of the 11th inning an RBI single to give the Fresno Grizzlies an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Sacramento River Cats on Monday at Chukchansi Park. The win moves the Grizzlies into sole possession of first place in the Pacific Southern Division.
The Grizzlies entered the bottom of the 11th trailing 7-6 after Shane Peterson hit a sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning. Chris Dominguez, who had a season-high three hits in the game, led off the 11th for Fresno with a double into the right-center field gap. Pinch-hitter Kensuke Tanaka followed by drilling a ground rule double down the first base line to score Dominguez and tie the game. Tanaka moved to third base on a fly ball from Juan Perez, setting up Jurica's game-winning hit.
It was the Grizzlies' first walk-off victory in 2013. Fresno also improved to 2-0 in extra-inning games.
The Grizzlies led for most of the game, but Sacramento drained the Fresno advantage once Grizzlies starting pitcher Boof Bonser was removed from the game. A pair of extra-base hits from Andy Parrino and Jemile Weeks off Fresno reliever Mitch Lively in the seventh closed the Grizzlies' lead to 6-3.
In the top of the ninth, Daric Barton led off the frame with a solo home run. Four batters later, Grant Green tied the game with a two-run home run off Heath Hembree.
Hembree was charged with a blown save, his first in eight save opportunities this year. He finished the game throwing 1 1/3 innings.
Bonser's strong performance was lost in the late-decided game. The right-hander walked four and surrendered two hits in his first two innings, but he settled in by cruising through his final four frames. Bonser finished the game pitching a season-high six innings, allowing three hits and one run. The lone run allowed by Bonser was on Michael Choice's double play in the first inning.
Brett Pill had three extra-base hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning that made it 6-1 Fresno. Pill scored in the fourth inning after he laced his second double of the game off the wall in left-center field. Johnny Monell drove in Pill with a single to center field. Pill had a double in his first at-bat during the second inning.
Jurica gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game in the third inning with a two-run home run. Fresno has now registered a home run in seven straight games. They entered the day tied for third in the PCL in home runs.
Fresno finished the game with 14 hits. Juan Ciriaco contributed his first multi-hit game of the year by going 2-for-4.
The Grizzlies and River Cats will meet in game two of the series on Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit will start for the Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park, facing Sacramento's right-hander Jesse Chavez.
