The Iowa Cubs inched closer to a playoff berth Saturday night with an 8-5 win over the Memphis Redbirds at Principal Park. With two games left in the regular season, Iowa needs only one more win to clinch the division title and make the playoffs. Jim Adduci led off the game with a single and with one out Brad Snyder walked as 9,420 fans cheered on the team in their push to the playoffs. Next batter, Jason Dubois doubled, scoring the pair for an early 2-0 Iowa lead. The game would stay that way until the top of the fourth inning. With two outs Memphis' Mark Hamilton homered to get the Redbirds on the board. Joe Mather and Ruben Gotay then hit back back-to-back singles to keep the inning alive. An Iowa error allowed Tony Cruz to reach base and advance the runners to second and third. James Rapoport then singled, scoring Mather and Gotay for a 3-2 Memphis advantage. Memphis went up 4-2 with another run in the sixth inning when Gotay plated Mather. However, it was a short-lived lead as the Cubs answered back in their half of the inning. Dubois, who was 2-for-4, singled to start the inning. LaHair then walked and Bobby Scales launched a home run over the center field wall giving Iowa a 5-4 lead. A three-run seventh allowed Iowa to increase their, 8-4. Adduci collected his third hit of the night, a single, to start the inning. Marquez Smith walked and Snyder hit a two-run double for the 7-4 lead. Scales then plated Snyder, putting Iowa ahead 8-4. Memphis scored another run in the ninth inning but it was not enough. Iowa's Mitch Atkins (8-3, 3.63) picked up the win throwing six innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits. Memphis' Lance Lynn (13-10, 4.77) was tagged with the loss.
